Our Humble Beginnings
Hercules® Tools originated as a small family-owned business in Southern California in the late 1970s. Our founder, John Smith, was a third-generation carpenter who was frustrated with the poor quality and high prices of power tools at the time. He dreamed of starting a company that could provide high-performing tools without the premium price tag.
In John’s garage workshop, he began tinkering with power tool designs and testing different materials and manufacturing techniques. Word spread locally about the durability and reliability of John’s homemade tools, and he started getting requests from fellow tradesmen to purchase them. Sensing a market opportunity, John officially launched his tool company in 1977.
The first product line consisted of just three tools: a circular saw, reciprocating saw, and drill. However, these inaugural tools showcased John’s innovative designs and emphasis on performance. They were an instant hit with contractors, framers, and other professionals who quickly realized these tools could withstand daily job site abuse without breaking the bank.
Growth Through Reputation
In those early days, Hercules® Tools grew primarily through word-of-mouth. Satisfied customers told their colleagues about these new tools that delivered professional results for DIY prices. Local hardware shops began carrying a few Hercules products, and demand steadily grew.
By the mid-1980s, John brought his two sons, Michael and David, into the family business. They expanded the product catalog to include more power tools, hand tools, storage, and accessories based on direct feedback from tradespeople. This commitment to listening to end-users and crafting durable, user-friendly tools for real-world needs became core to the Hercules brand.
Direct-to-Consumer Model
Hercules® Tools experienced rapid growth in the 1990s by adopting a direct-to-consumer model. We opened our first retail showroom in 1992, allowing customers to see and test products in person. The showroom concept was a big hit, and we expanded to over 50 stores nationwide by the end of the decade.
Selling direct to customers allowed us to cut out the middleman and pass significant cost savings on to buyers. This “eliminate the middleman” approach becomes central to the Hercules identity. Our tools match the performance of big-name brands but sell for a fraction of the price because customers buy directly from us.
In-House Innovation
As Hercules® Tools expanded, we made major investments in research, design, testing, and manufacturing facilities. While other brands outsourced tool production overseas, we knew the only way to maintain our high standards of quality was to engineer and produce tools in-house.
Our dedicated product development team works closely with tradespeople to identify problems and frustrations with existing tools. We then engineer innovative solutions tailored specifically to how our customers work. Extensive prototyping and field testing ensures that each new Hercules tool can withstand the demands of daily professional use.
